Sunshine State 250 Showdown
Seventy-eight American Legion Posts from across Florida answered the call to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in their communities through parades, festivals, flag ceremonies, veteran tributes, children’s activities and other patriotic events.
The Sunshine State 250 Showdown recognized Posts that found creative and meaningful ways to bring the America 250 celebration to life while engaging veterans, families, local leaders and community partners.
First Place: Post 103, Punta Gorda
Post 103 earned first place for its Flag Day drone show and community festival at Laishley Park. The first-of-its-kind event lit up the sky over Charlotte Harbor and drew an estimated 10 percent of Punta Gorda’s population. The celebration included children’s activities, community vendors, veteran service organizations, local businesses and remarks highlighting America 250 and 1 Nation.
Second Place: Post 402, Panama City Beach
Post 402 took second place for its Pier Park parade and Aaron Bessant memorial ceremony. The two-day tribute featured Founding Father reenactors, a JROTC honor guard, children’s floats and games, letters of appreciation written to veterans and participation from the mayor and local media.
Third Place: Post 9, Jacksonville
Post 9 received third place for its Boots on the Ground event, which brought together approximately 1,000 motorcycles and 300 Jeeps, many decorated with America 250 and 1 Nation branding. The event included a 1 Nation exhibit, collaboration among regional Posts and organizations, and fundraising for five veteran charities.
Four additional Posts were named Spirit of 250 Honorees for their outstanding efforts:

Post 157, Margate, for its award-winning Iwo Jima tribute float, multigenerational participation and strong America 250 presence.

Post 252, Seminole, for its Freedom 250 campaign, which included five events over five months, community celebrations, children’s activities, veteran outreach and suicide-prevention awareness.

Post 54, Fernandina Beach, for its three-day celebration featuring handmade anniversary keepsakes, thank-you cards for service members and a commitment to continuing the festivities despite challenging weather.

Post 224, Madison, for displaying more than 350 full-size American flags around the courthouse for seven weeks and returning each flag to its sponsor with a commemorative certificate.

All seven recognized Posts will receive awards in the form of upgrades and improvements tailored to their individual Post needs. They will also be formally recognized during the Americanism Commission Meeting at the American Legion National Convention on Saturday, August 29.
The Sunshine State 250 Showdown demonstrated the impact local Posts can have when they bring veterans, families and community partners together in celebration of America’s history and future.
